Dongjiaomin Lane, stretching nearly 1.6 kilometers, is one of the longer hutongs in old Beijing. After 1860, it became a hub for foreign banks, post offices, hospitals, and more. You can visit to appreciate the Western-style architecture and reflect on the tumultuous modern history. Exploring Dongjiaomin Lane is an enjoyable experience.

At the intersection of Dongjiaomin Lane and Zhengyi Road, the dark red Western-style building currently occupied by Zhongrong Group was originally the site of the Japanese Yokohama Specie Bank and the birthplace of the Xinmin Newspaper founded by writer Zhang Henshui. The castle-like architectural design is unique.

The entire lane is open all year round, with 24-hour access. Essential tips: 1. Most buildings are now closed, and only their exteriors can be visited. 2. Xijiaomin Lane, adjacent to Dongjiaomin Lane, was once a significant financial street in Beijing during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. Buildings such as Zhang Tingge’s residence, the former Beijing branch of the Chinese Remittance and Exchange Bank, and the China Currency Museum are all located here and can be visited together.
