Dongli Stockaded Village is located in Dongxian Village, Shalong Town, Chaoyang. It is the hometown of Zheng Wulou, a leader of overseas Chinese of Teochew origin in Thailand. Its symmetrical, square and majestic stockaded village shape, and the neatly arranged and closely arranged ‘mansion-style’ dwellings inside the stockaded village show extraordinary momentum. It is a typical square stockaded village in Chaoshan.
Dongli Stockaded Village was built in the 28th year of Qianlong (1763). It was built by Zheng Yuzong, a giant maritime merchant at that time. It is a huge square stockaded village covering an area of 12,544 square meters. It faces northwest from southeast. There are stockade walls 112 meters long and 0.7 meters thick on all sides of the stockaded village. There are watchtowers at the four corners. There are three gates in total: north, east and west. The neatly arranged mansions inside the stockaded village are in the form of ‘rising like a palace’ with three streets and six lanes. There are 22 ‘four-point gold’ houses neatly distributed, with a total of 466 rooms. In addition, there are 36 sets of two-bedroom and one-living-room houses around the stockaded village to protect the stockaded village. Dongli Stockaded Village has always been known for producing many literati and warriors.
