Dongmen Fishing Village faces across the sea from Shipu Fishing Port, and is the filming location for the renowned film ‘Fisherman’s Song’. Visitors who trace the film’s footsteps can either drive along the port avenue over the Tongwamen Cross-Sea Bridge to Dongmen Island, or take a ferry, passing by the newly built steel fishing vessels moored in the port, and disembark within fifteen minutes. However, there is no trace of ‘Little Cat’s’ home from the film: modern residential buildings in uniform, masts covering the sea sky, with large red dragon flags flying high, and a marble stele standing by the shore stating ‘Zhejiang’s First Fishing Village’, making one feel that the air here carries a modern ‘fisherman’ flavor. There is also the ‘Fisherman’s Song’ filming monument silently conversing with your soul, leading you through time and space, evoking the fishing village in the film. In the over 1000-meter long outdoor fishing net manufacturing site, the fishing net frames are neatly arranged, imposing, and among the varying shades of green nets, there are fashionable fishing women sitting, who are descendants of the ‘big braid fisher girl’ ‘Little Cat’, offering visitors a fishing family fun activity – ‘Net Weaving Joy’; for those seeking the ‘big braid girl’ who taught ‘Little Cat’ to row, a ‘rowing competition’ has been specially set up. When you sit at the seaside dining table, gentle waves play soft music for you, and the sea breeze comes to brush away the dust from your body; when you hold a glass and taste seafood, today’s ‘Little Cats’ will invite you – every year on September 16th, the day when the three-month fishing ban ends, and the first day of thousands of boats going out to sea to fish, you can harvest and return on the same day or the next, welcome to come back then and taste the delicious ‘first net’ of the East China Sea seafood. Tourists who have not been to the island may not know that Dongmen Island is also a place with a deep historical and cultural accumulation. Dongmen Island has a unique geographical location, serving as a shield for Shipu, with the Song Dynasty’s Dongmen Stockade being the first military camp in Xiangshan’s history. There are many ancient sites and relics on the island, such as the Mazu Temple at the foot of Laodao Head Official Mountain, built in the early Ming Dynasty, covering an area of over two thousand square meters, with a construction area of twelve hundred square meters. There is also a peculiar custom about Mazu on the island: it is said that Mazu once visited this island, so local fishermen chose the auspicious day of Mazu’s birthday on the 23rd day of the third lunar month, set sail north to the Dai Qu Ocean for fishing, and held Mazu’s birthday celebration and farewell ceremony for relatives going out to sea, which is rare along the coast of China. Nowadays, this custom has evolved into an important activity in China’s Fishing Festival – the Mazu’s Tour for Safety Fireworks Evening. There are also ancient City God Temples, General Wang Temple, and Dongmen Temple on the island, with the Song, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties’ built defense stockade walls and beacon towers, recently restored Qing Dynasty ancient gun batteries, Cai Yuanpei statues and inscription steles, and a sea goddess Mazu over ten meters tall.
The venue is open all year round and accessible 24 hours a day.
