Dongming Thatched Cottage was the place where Fan Qin stored his collection of books before the construction of the Tianyi Pavilion. Fan Qin (1506-1585), styled Yaoqin and nicknamed Dongming, named his study room ‘Dongming Thatched Cottage’. The current Dongming Thatched Cottage was rebuilt in 1980.
Fan Qin was fond of collecting books, and during his travels as an official, he paid special attention to searching for local literature. As his collection grew, Dongming Thatched Cottage could no longer accommodate the books, leading Fan Qin to decide to rebuild a new book building on the east side of his residence, which later became the renowned Tianyi Pavilion.
Although the Tianyi Pavilion is now praised as one of the oldest existing libraries in China, we should not overlook the importance of Dongming Thatched Cottage. It was the foundation that laid the groundwork for the later Tianyi Pavilion. Without Dongming Thatched Cottage, there would be no Tianyi Pavilion, which has been celebrated throughout history.
