Dongpo Pavilion is located within Hepu Normal School, surrounded by green waters and boasting exceptional scenery. It is said that Su Dongpo, during the third year of the Yuanfu era in the Song Dynasty (1100 AD), stayed in Qinglexuan in Hepu for only two months, yet he composed several poems and essays, including ‘A Night in the Rain at Jingxing Temple’ and ‘Notes on the Words of the Elders of Hepu’. In memory of him, later generations built the Dongpo Pavilion on the site of the former Qinglexuan. The pavilion has been reconstructed several times throughout the dynasties, with the current structure rebuilt in 1944. Dongpo Pavilion is a brick and wood structure, with a large plaque inscribed with ‘Dongpo Pavilion’ hanging above the main entrance, a calligraphy piece by the abbot Tiechan from Guangzhou’s Datong Temple in the 1940s. On the front wall, there is a carving of the poet, above which reads ‘Xianli Yizong’ in four ancient and vigorous characters. To the upper left of the image are more than ten stone carvings of the poet’s works in Hepu. Inside the pavilion, the front wall is embedded with a stone carving of Su Dongpo and more than ten other stone carvings of his poems. About 30 meters east of the pavilion lies the Dongpo Well, one of the four famous wells in Lianzhou, said to have been dug personally by Su Dongpo. It is believed that those who drink from this well will achieve success in their examinations. To the east of the pavilion is ‘Dongpo Park’. Surrounded by lake water with shimmering waves, weeping willows providing shade, and beautiful scenery, it is a key cultural preservation unit of the county and a popular tourist attraction in Hepu. Open all year round, access is available 24 hours a day.
