Dongpo Well is located on the eastern district of Huizhou City, atop the Baihe Peak. The well has a width of 0.6 meters and a depth of 14.5 meters. Constructed with blue bricks, it features a simple and ancient appearance. Adjacent to the well, there is a well curb, and a stone carving with the words ‘Bing Chuan’ written by the famous scholar Guan Kui during the 15th year of the Qianlong Emperor’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1750).
It is an important historical site associated with Su Shi (Dongpo), a prominent literary figure from the Northern Song Dynasty, who lived in Huizhou. The site is well-preserved. Historical records indicate that in the third year of the Shaosheng era in the Northern Song Dynasty (1096), Su Shi purchased several acres of land on Baihe Peak, ‘to build twenty rooms and plan for the rest of his life.’ The following year, Su Shi moved into his new residence. Due to the high elevation and distant water sources, Su Shi hired workers to dig a well and commemorated the event with a poem: ‘Today, the servants are delighted, the yellow soil is again moldable. In the morning, the bottle receives snow-like milk, and in the evening, the jar stops the ice-like flow. My life is like this, where is it not difficult? Even a spoonful is a gift from heaven. With a bent arm, there is still joy. ‘ The site is open all year round, accessible 24/7.Dongpo Well
