Suzhou, a city with a 2500-year history, has been a cultural hub since the Spring and Autumn period. It is renowned for producing top scholars, reflecting a legacy of literati and scholars that continues to this day. This cultural essence permeates every aspect of modern life in Suzhou, from its gardens to its Kunqu Opera, Pingtan, and silk and bamboo music, all infused with a contemporary flair. The new and international Suzhou harmoniously blends with the ancient Wu culture, creating a unique Suzhou charm.
The Dreams of Shantang live performance encapsulates this Suzhou sentiment. Wu Zixiao, the son of Wu Yipeng, a Ming Dynasty Minister of Rites and a native of Shantang, built the ‘Zhen Qu Yuan’ garden to honor his parents. The garden is ingeniously divided into four seasonal sections based on its topography, featuring a variety of plants and attractions such as Meilin Spring Dawn, Yuxi Wind Lotus, Golden Autumn Moon, and Wuzi Pavilion. These elements showcase the artistic characteristic of Suzhou gardens: ‘Made by man, yet seeming from heaven.’ The garden at night comes alive with the melodious sounds of flutes and gentle singing, inviting visitors to lean on the railing and contemplate the elegant tunes, lost in a reverie. Complementing the experience is the soft and glutinous Suzhou dim sum and a fragrant cup of jasmine tea. Looking back, the piano sounds like a gentle spring or a mountain stream, and a girl, like a lilac with a hint of melancholy, passes by with an oil-paper umbrella, as if in a dream. Travel through time and savor this cultural product filled with the warmth of Suzhou nostalgia. The performance is open from April 2nd to October 31st, Tuesday to Sunday, from 19:00 to 22:00. Mondays are closed. During New Year’s Day, Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day, performances are held from 19:00 to 22:00, with three shows each night at 19:00, 20:00, and 21:00.
