The Echo Wall is situated within the Temple of Heaven Park in Beijing. It is a circular wall surrounding the Imperial Vault of Heaven, standing approximately 3.72 meters high, 0.9 meters thick, and measuring 204.728 meters in circumference. Constructed with bricks from Linqing, Shandong, the wall features a seamless brickwork design topped with blue glazed tile roofs. Due to the regular curvature of the wall and the extremely smooth and neat surface, it serves as an excellent reflector for sound waves, which can continuously reflect and propagate along the wall.
If two people stand behind the eastern and western ancillary halls, speaking close to the wall and facing north, the sound waves will travel along the wall, refracting and reaching the other end over one to two hundred meters away. The interaction between the two, with one calling and the other responding, creates a fascinating and prolonged acoustic experience.
