Er Yan Temple, also known as ‘Buddha Pavilion’, was originally built during the Yuan Dynasty and covers an area of 7000 square meters, with a history of over 800 years. The temple once housed a thousand-armed and thousand-eyed Avalokitesvara statue carved from a century-old camphor tree, which was unfortunately destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. The ancient temple was relocated to its current site in 1993 due to municipal construction and merged with Zhang Weng Temple in Jianghai Town. The temple complex consists of the Mahavira Hall and the Jade Buddha Building, among other structures. Within the temple, there are two ancient ginkgo trees from the Song Dynasty, a male and a female, which are still lush and famous far and wide. The Nirvana Sutra states ‘two kinds of adornments’, one is wisdom and the other is virtue, known as ‘Blessings and Wisdom Adornments’, hence the name ‘Er Yan Temple’. The temple is open all year round from 8:00 to 16:30.
