The MadeIn Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition ‘The End of an Era’ by artist Tobias Kaspar on October 24, 2024, presenting his unique artistic creations at various stages. Kaspar invites the audience to focus on the subtle interweaving of consumer culture and identity recognition in his works and explore the profound social insights therein. ‘If you really want to hear me out, the first thing you might want to know is where I was born, how I spent my unfortunate childhood, what my parents did before I was born, and such David Copperfield-like nonsense. But I honestly tell you that I have no intention of telling you all this.’ – J.D. Salinger, ‘The Catcher in the Rye’. ‘The End of an Era’ is an intersection connecting the known and the unknown, prosperity and silence. In the dilapidated framework, Kaspar leads us to face the absurdity of modern consumerism. Through images and sculptures, he traverses the fabric of fashion and consumption and reveals the fragile truth hidden under the gorgeous packaging. As always, Kaspar uses everyday objects as carriers to create artworks that transcend reality. He cleverly captures the fleeting trends in the fashion world and outlines the soul of clothing through photography, exploring the stories behind it. In this spatio-temporal narrative, 365 snow globes shine like stars, and the little bear inside quietly tells an unspoken refusal: ‘I’d rather not.’ The exhibition is not only a visual feast but also a profound examination of identity. In the ‘Shanghai Portraits’ series, Kaspar combines clothing art with community participation and weaves the breath of the city into each work. The viewer is not limited to appreciation but also participates in the interweaving of art and life, taking away a wisp of inspiration and becoming a part of this endless flow. ‘The End of an Era’ seems to be singing a hymn of transition, exuding the uncertain beauty of the future between the known and the unknown. At this moment, Kaspar reflects on the exhaustion and regeneration of artistic criticism. In the falling snow of each glass ball, a subtle revelation in the eternal flow is presented. This exhibition is supported by the Pro Helvetia Shanghai. At the same time, the artist will bring his performance project ‘Shanghai Portraits’ on the opening day. Thanks to Peicheng School in Chongming District for its support for this project. The opening hours are from October 24 to December 31. The specific business status is subject to the opening situation on that day.
