The Memorial Hall of Li Shutong, also known as Master Hong Yi, is located in the Hu Pao Mengquan Mountain Forest Park. It marks the place where this modern artist and patriotic monk practiced Buddhism as it is where the Dinghui Temple once stood.
Li Shutong was one of the pioneers who initiated a new era in modern Chinese culture. He was among the first to participate in the performance of “civilized drama” (modern drama) and composed new songs for the landscapes of West Lake. Outstanding figures like Feng Zikai were among his disciples.
Today, the Xiling Seal Society houses his seal carvings and handwritten copies of the “Amitabha Sutra”. Behind the Hu Pao Spring, the Master Hong Yi’s tomb pagoda is built.
The memorial hall is divided into three exhibition halls. The central hall has a three-meter-tall bronze statue of Li Shutong. Flanking it are two large reliefs titled “Transcendence” and “Embracing Buddhism”. The exhibits show Li Shutong’s life and monastic history, demonstrating his artistic achievements, Buddhist scholarship, and patriotic spirit. Display cases contain lyrics written by Li Shutong, the long-out-of-print “Qingliang Song Collection”, dozens of precious photos provided by his granddaughter, and various artifacts such as calligraphy copies, books, seals, and handkerchiefs used by Li Shutong.
The left hall displays Li Shutong’s calligraphic treasures, including eight hand-scribed stone tablets and ten wooden engravings of aphorisms.
The right hall, named “Book Nest”, features oil paintings by Xu Beihong, woodcuts by Feng Zikai, a portrait of Hong Yi by Fei Xinmei, and couplets by Qian Jun, along with other calligraphic and painting works.Scenic Area Opening Hours
