Fahai Temple is located in Youxi Town, Linhai City. It was first built in January of the third year of Guangshun in the Later Zhou Dynasty of the Five Dynasties (953). In the third year of Zhiping in the Northern Song Dynasty (1066), it was given a plaque. With a history of more than a thousand years, it is a thousand-year-old ancient temple and one of the eight ancient temples in Linhai. Fahai Chan Temple was originally called Zanyu Hall. In the early days, it was a nunnery. There was an old nun and a young nun in the nunnery. According to legend, the old nun was told in a dream that a monk Fahai would come to the nunnery in the future, so the name of the nunnery was changed to Fahai Temple. Of course, this is just a legend. The village where Fahai Temple is located originally belonged to Zhiyan Village and later belonged to Chaitan Village. On the newly built mountain gate of Fahai Temple, the plaque with the temple name ‘Fahai Chan Temple’ was handwritten by the current abbot, Shi Xinren. The couplet on the gate, ‘Bodhi enlightens three thousand realms; Buddhist Dharma is all-encompassing and boundless heaven’, was written by Mr. Sun Zhongshang. Entering the mountain gate is a high platform. Going up from the high platform is Renle Garden. There are tree species such as four-season osmanthus, camphor tree, and red maple planted in the garden. Renheyuan was built for pilgrims and tourists to rest. In the warm winter sun, the monks in the temple also take out their quilts and pillows to bask in the sun. The geographical environment of Fahai Temple is quite good. It can be described as surrounded by mountains and waters. Three hundred meters to the south is Wushi Mountain. I wonder if the shape of Wushi Mountain is very much like five lions. To the north, it is backed by Jigong Rock, also known as Monk Mountain. The mountain is full of green trees and bamboo forests. Behind the main hall of Sakyamuni is a large and flat field. Its height is three to five meters higher than that of the main hall. It is very suitable for building a new main hall. At this location, one can hear the sound of the mountain stream dozens of meters to the east. The sound is very loud, even in the dry winter. It can be seen that the feng shui of Fahai Temple is very good. There is also a peculiar landscape in Fahai Temple, that is, there is a Buddha spring. The water source of this spring gushes out from underground and never dries up all year round. However, it is not well valued and protected nowadays.
The opening hours are from 9:00 to 16:30 all year round.Fahai Temple
