The Fayuan Museum of Timber Architecture in Beijing was founded in 2020 by architect and artist Zhu Xiaodi. It is located in a Ming and Qing dynasty quadrangle courtyard on Qianmen East Road in Beijing. It collects and exhibits fine timber structures of folk buildings from different regions in ancient China. It is an exchange platform for the research, inheritance and dissemination of traditional Chinese architectural culture.
In traditional Chinese architecture, there are a large number of wooden components, such as columns, beams, brackets, humps, sparrow braces, etc. They endow buildings with artistic and cultural attributes. The Fayuan Museum showcases the treasures of ancient Chinese folk architectural heritage. Each collection tells a story about itself and the era it is in. The exhibition part of the Fayuan Museum consists of a permanent exhibition hall on the first floor and a temporary exhibition hall. The permanent exhibition hall exhibits more than 100 collections all year round, including structural and decorative components of different parts in traditional folk buildings in the south and north. The temporary exhibition hall is mainly used for special exhibitions of wooden collections and related art exhibitions. There is also a traditional architecture study and an outdoor terrace on the second floor. Here, you can read traditional architecture books collected by Zhu Xiaodi, overlook the old Beijing hutongs and quadrangle courtyards, and feel the cultural accumulation of historical vicissitudes.
