Phoenix Island Park is located at the head of the sandbar under the Hanjiang Bridge in the southern suburb of Chaozhou. The Phoenix Terrace in the park is composed of two parts: the terrace body and the pavilion. It is an ancient-style terrace and pavilion building. The pavilion with four columns and single-eaved structure stands on the tall stone platform foundation. The eaves are high and elegant, and it is majestic and elegant. The plaques such as ‘Phoenix Terrace with Timely Rain’, ‘Mainstay in the Midstream’, and ‘The Phoenix Comes in Ceremony’ on it contrast with the wooden structure, Ming-style arches and the traditional green tiles of the roof, exuding a strong literary atmosphere.
Since the terrace was built in the Ming Dynasty, officials and local gentlemen of the Ming and Qing dynasties successively advocated the construction of more than ten scenic spots here, such as the ‘Ten Prime Ministers’ Shrine’, ‘Phoenix Terrace Academy’, ‘Wenchang Shrine’, ‘Dragon God Shrine’, ‘Tianhou Palace’, ‘Zhenhong Temple’, ‘Lu Gong Shrine’, ‘Zhou Gong Shrine’ and ‘Que Tower’. However, due to the changes of the times, most of these scenic spots have disappeared without a trace. Only the Phoenix Terrace, Que Tower, Tianhou Palace and other scenic spots with wonderful scenery and prosperous humanities have been rebuilt repeatedly. The original name of Phoenix Terrace was Old Crow Island. In the late Ming Dynasty, the magistrate of Chaozhou visited the sandbar many times. He loved its tranquility and elegance. At the same time, he felt that the literary style of Chaozhou was prosperous and the scenery was extraordinary. He thought that this should be the place where phoenixes perch in legends, not the place where old crows gather. So he changed the original name ‘Old Crow Island’ to ‘Phoenix Island’, and in 1568 of the second year of Longqing in the Ming Dynasty, he built a stone platform more than ten feet high on Phoenix Island and named it ‘Phoenix Terrace’. Since then, this has become a famous scenic spot that tourists find it hard to leave. The Phoenix with Timely Rain, one of the eight scenic spots in Chaozhou. In ancient times, it was also called ‘Waiting for Rain on Phoenix Terrace’, and some people also call it ‘Timely Rain on Phoenix Terrace’. In summer and autumn, the breeze is gentle here, and the river breeze blows, making the summer heat disappear immediately. Especially in the season of sudden sunshine and sudden rain, the strange scenery on the river is ever-changing and even more spectacular. There are pieces of sails. The Xiangzi Bridge is misty and rainy. Looking up at the top of Bijia Mountain, the light clouds are rolling and the pavilions are locked in fog. This fascinating and wonderful scenery is ‘The Phoenix with Timely Rain’. Kite Festival on September 9th. Every year on ‘September 9th’, it is the kite festival in Chaozhou.
