The ‘Flying and Small Steps: Pierre Bernard Commemorative Special Exhibition’ quietly opened at the International Design Museum of the China Academy of Art. This exhibition brings together more than 100 posters, original manuscripts, design manuals, educational and important literature research results donated in two batches by the China International Design Museum. Except for a small number of poster works involving the Grapus period (1968–1990), this exhibition focuses more on Pierre’s design achievements from the later period of Grapus to the ACG period (1991–2013), involving public domain designs from large cultural institutions such as the Louvre Museum, the Pompidou Center, and French national parks, to social welfare organizations such as the French People’s Aid Association, as well as small theaters. In addition to posters, the exhibits also include the logo design of the Louvre and its systematic application, guide brochures, multilingual manuals and other promotional materials. Among them, the materials of French national parks are the most detailed, including the logo design process, application system, seven sets of color application schemes, and park signage design. The last section of the exhibition reviews Pierre’s travels around the world, conducting workshop teaching, and promoting professional design activities such as the Chaumont Poster Festival. He practices professional education, public aesthetic education and design culture through design activities. The site covers the poster results of themed workshops held by Pierre successively at the China Academy of Art and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, France in 2003, the visual symbol analysis charts of five graduate students from the School of Visual Communication in 2024, and creative notes from 1986 to 2015 (a span of 29 years). The exhibition takes Pierre Bernard’s ideological turning point between ideal and reality as the axis. Centering on his core concept of serving the people with graphic design, it is divided into three sections: ‘Angry Flying’, ‘Walking Slowly with Small Steps’, and ‘Stopping and Looking Far’. From the high-spirited collective ‘angry flight’ to facing reality and practicing step by step, and then to transcending the times and looking far. The exhibition vividly shows Pierre Bernard’s unremitting pursuit of ‘This is both a political commitment and a graphic commitment’ throughout his life, and comprehensively presents a complete picture of Pierre Bernard’s multiple identities in his career. This exhibition is not only a review of Pierre Bernard’s design achievements, but also a tribute to the spirit of teachers.

The opening hours are from September 28th to December 23rd. The specific business status is subject to the opening situation on the day.
