Chen Gelao’s Former Residence is located on the Prime Minister’s Mansion Street, where the owner, Chen Yuanlong, held a high position and was known as a powerful figure in the Yongzheng Dynasty, serving as a Grand Secretary of the Wen Yuan Pavilion. He was commonly referred to as the Prime Minister or ‘Xiangguo’, and during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the term ‘Ge Lao’ was also used for high-ranking officials like him. Thus, his residence is colloquially known as ‘Chen Gelao’s Former Residence’.
The main entrance of Chen Gelao’s Former Residence, facing north towards the river, exudes an imposing aura. However, upon entering, one finds that all the buildings are oriented towards the south. The first section of the eastern route is the Chen family’s ancestral hall for worship. In front of the sleeping quarters, there used to be a high wall like a screen, which has now partially collapsed, revealing three small rooms. In the courtyard stands a 600-year-old ginkgo tree, tall and robust, evergreen throughout the seasons. Within the residence, there are also the ‘Three Treasures of the Chen Family’, which include the Ming Dynasty Chen family’s calligraphy steles renowned in the calligraphy world, the九龙original plaque ‘Gong Lao Zhu Xun’ bestowed by Emperor Yongzheng, and the ageless ancient arhat pine that leaves visitors in awe. There are also historical records of Emperor Qianlong’s six southern tours and four stops in Haining, along with folk tales about the mystery of Qianlong’s birth. The residence is open all year round from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.Chen Gelao’s Former Residence
