The former residence of Ji Xiaolan is a two-entry quadrangle courtyard and is a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit in Beijing. Its layout is facing south from north. The gate facing the street is a hard mountain-top auspicious gate tower and is located in the southeast corner of the entire residence. In the front yard, there is a wisteria vine. According to legend, it was planted by Ji Xiaolan himself back then.
At the front of the backyard is the ‘Yuewei Thatched Cottage’. The plan of the ‘cottage’ is in an inverted ‘convex’ shape. In the middle of the north side inside the hall, there is a screen. Hanging on it is the horizontal plaque of ‘Former Site of Yuewei Thatched Cottage’, written by the famous calligrapher Mr. Qi Gong. ‘Notes of Yuewei Thatched Cottage’ is Ji Xiaolan’s work in pursuit of old news. It is as famous as Pu Songling’s ‘Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio’. This is also the study where he bent over his desk to write. What attracts people’s attention in the ‘Yuewei Thatched Cottage’ is the long dry tobacco pipe displayed in the display cabinet. As is known to all, Ji Xiaolan is addicted to smoking and has an extremely strong smoking addiction. His dry tobacco pipe is specially customized, and he also has the nickname ‘Ji the Big Tobacco Pipe’.
