The former residence was built in 1862 during the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty. It was originally built by Yang Shangkun’s great-grandfather Yang Shisui according to the specifications of a third-rank official in the Qing Dynasty. It covers an area of about 10,000 square meters in total. The courtyard covers an area of 2,800 square meters, with a building area of 2,400 square meters and 39 rooms. Looking down, it is in the shape of the Chinese character ‘四’. Looking at it from the front, it is like a huge roc about to spread its wings and fly high. The design is unique and the materials are exquisite, revealing the ideals and aspirations of the owner.
