Former Site of Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea

The former site of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea is a Shikumen house located on Madang Road. It was built in 1925. After the March 1st Movement in Korea, the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea relocated several times and settled here in 1926. At that time, Kim Gu served as the head of state. In 1932, due to the arrest of members of the Provisional Government of Korea by Japanese military police, they were forced to evacuate Shanghai.

However, it is the ‘former site’ where the Provisional Government of Korea had a long office time in Shanghai and is well-preserved. The former site of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea was officially opened to the public in 1993. The Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea is known as the ‘holy temple of the Korean nation’. The Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea is currently located at No.

4, Lane 306, Madang Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai. After the restoration and repair project in 1993, it was officially opened to the public. In more than 10 years, the ‘former site’ has received more than one million Korean visitors. In 2001, the management office of the ‘former site’ and the Korean memorial hall fully renovated the building. It shows an overview of the activities of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai.

Now, as the holy temple of Korea and a symbol of the joint anti-Japanese struggle between China and South Korea, it is attracting more and more Chinese and foreign visitors.
