The designer of Xintian’an Church was British architect William T. Doyle, one of the very few architects in Shanghai at the time who held membership in the Royal Institute of British Architects. He chose a Gothic Revival architectural style for the church, featuring a 33-meter tall bell tower in the center (once the highest point on the north bank of Suzhou River), and chapels on its east and west sides, giving the church a cruciform overall layout. The exterior walls of the church are constructed with a mix of blue and red bricks. Unfortunately, the church was later damaged and was renovated in 2010 for other purposes. The architectural exterior is open for viewing all day, while the interior is temporarily not open to tourists. Specific opening times are subject to on-site announcements at the scenic area.
