The Fortress of São Paulo is located on the hill of Monte Sie, near the Ruins of St. Paul’s, and was built in 1616. It is one of the important historical sites in Macau. The fortress once served as the core of Macau’s defense system, constructing a defensive network of artillery covering the east and west coasts. The structure of the fortress is an irregular quadrilateral, with four corners serving as bastions, walls approximately 9 meters high, capable of mounting over thirty cannons, and able to withstand attacks from all directions.

Today, the Fortress of São Paulo has become a popular tourist destination, with a large green space in front, offering a panoramic view of Macau. The site is open all year round from 07:00 to 19:00, with specific operating conditions subject to the day’s opening status.

Essential Tips: 1. Please wear comfortable shoes to facilitate climbing. 2. There are no fences around the fortress, only signs, posing some danger, so visitors with children must be especially cautious. 3. Out of respect for the preservation of cultural relics, please do not sit on the ancient cannons or damage them recklessly.
