Fossil Forest is located within the picturesque Shenzhen Xianhu Botanical Garden. It is one of the components of the garden’s paleontological museum, which is divided into three major sections: the wood fossil exhibition area, the animal fossil exhibition area, and the plant fossil exhibition area. The Fossil Forest, which is the plant fossil exhibition area, is situated in the southern outdoor area of the museum.

This exhibition area showcases ancient plant fossils, including fossils of algae, ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms. The photos taken below mainly feature fossils of ginkgo, metasequoia, cycads, and alsos palms, including the Liaoning ancient fruit fossil, known as ‘China’s first flower’. The area primarily demonstrates the plant ecological environment of the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras to visitors.

All the wood fossils displayed in the Fossil Forest are formed from ancient tree trunks that have been buried underground and undergone petrification. The wood fossils are the secondary xylem tissues of the tree trunks, replaced by minerals such as silicon dioxide, calcium carbonate, and iron sulfide, while the original ancient tree shape and internal fine structures are preserved. The opening hours are from 08:00 to 18:00 all year round.
