The Fossilized Wood Forest in Xinchang, established in March 1999, is home to over 50 unique fossilized wood trees.
These fossilized woods are over a hundred million years old, hence the nickname ‘Longevity Stone’. On the stone cliff, there is a character for ‘Longevity’, measuring 15 meters in height and 11 meters in width, written by the renowned calligrapher Shen Peng.
The predecessor of these fossilized woods were trees such as pine, cypress, fir, ginkgo, and birch that grew in the primeval forests over a hundred million years ago. Due to tectonic movements, the original trees were buried deep underground, and over time, plant fibers were replaced and filled with precipitated silica from silica solutions, forming wood-shaped silicate rocks, also known as petrified wood.
These vivid prehistoric fossils reproduce the body and texture of that era, making them valuable resources for studying the paleoclimate, crustal changes, and paleobiological history of the East China region. They are highly ornamental and research-worthy, extremely precious.
Some stand tall and graceful, while others are rugged and robust; some are as black as coal, while others resemble yellow wax; some still have bark and insect scars, while others have been artificially polished to resemble jade; some have been buried after being struck by lightning or fire, and others have been impacted by water currents, with sand and stones embedded in the tree crevices. The stones and the trees have experienced similar fates and are now merged together…
