Fuzhou Shipyard Gezhi Garden is located to the north of the elevated bridge of Mawei Shipyard. It comprises the Shipyard Government Office, Chucai Pavilion, Official Hall Pond, Front and Back Schools, and the Shipyard Time-Space Tunnel, named after the concept of ‘investigating things to extend knowledge’. In front of the Shipyard Government Office, there are two lion statues. The office building has six columns and five bays, divided into three main entrances: central, left, and right, each adorned with large door gods.

Above the central entrance hangs a vertical plaque inscribed with ‘Chief of Shipbuilding’. The couplets on either side of the main door are written by Shen Baozhen, reflecting his determination to ‘learn from foreign techniques to control foreign powers’ in naval affairs. The office building is a brick-wood structure with a three-deep, three-bay layout, covering an area of approximately 480 square meters, and includes a large hall, front and back courtyards, and side rooms.

In 1866, Chucai Pavilion served as a storage facility for timber, coal, and steel, and later became a leisure place for shipyard officials, symbolizing ‘storing talents widely’. It is said that Shen Baozhen, in his spare time, would rest here with his colleagues, composing poetry and couplets.

After the destruction of the Shipyard Government Office, the Official Hall Pond, built in 1867, was preserved. It has a total area of 700 square meters, with granite banks and surrounded by stone column railings. The pond is connected to the Min River through the Shipyard Thirteen Factory waterway, with sluice gates on both sides, and its water level rises and falls with the tides.

The rebuilt Shipyard Schools, maintaining their appearance from 1866, are divided into front and back schools, with similar architecture and layout. Both schools feature two-story veranda-style western buildings as classrooms in the front and two-story French-style buildings as dormitories in the back. The two schools are separated, and they train in different specialties.

After passing through the front and back schools, following the directional signs, one can reach the Shipyard Time-Space Tunnel, located at Ma’an Mountain in Mawei, transformed from an air raid shelter. Utilizing sound, light, and electricity, the tunnel is arranged with two main exhibition areas: Shipbuilding Culture and Civil Defense Science Popularization. It educates visitors about shipbuilding culture and civil defense knowledge through interactive and entertaining methods. The Shipyard Time-Space Tunnel not only connects various shipbuilding attractions and historical sites around Ma’an Mountain in space but also enriches and perfects the content of shipbuilding culture in time.
