Gao Guanyin in Meizhou was originally a rock eaves on the top of Huangshazhang Peak. According to legend, in an unknown year and month, a devout believer placed a seated statue of Guanyin in the rock for worship. After worshiping, a Buddhist light and heavenly court were seen on the peak. This is called ‘opening the heavenly eye’. Since then, incense has been flourishing. Especially in September of the lunar calendar, climbing up to worship Guanyin is even more favored by people in Meizhou City. Gao Guanyin has thus become widely known. The deity worshipped by Guanyin is the compassionate Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva in Buddhism. So far, no origin records of Gao Guanyin on Huangshazhang have been found. However, Buddhism has been introduced to Meizhou for at least a thousand years. Under the sparsely populated cliff on the high Huangshazhang Mountain, the Guanyin in Meizhou, the world’s Hakka capital, has also become a deity for Meizhou people to climb up and make pilgrimages. It is also a good place to view the night view of Meizhou City. Open all year round and all day long.
