The Gaozhou Xian Tai Temple is located on Wenming Road, Gaozhou City, to the north of Panzhou Park. It was first built in the 14th year of Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty (1535 AD). It was renovated successively in the 43rd year of Jiajing and during the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty. It is a Xian Tai Temple with a relatively large scale and high grade in Gaozhou area. The main building of the Xian Tai Temple has three entrances, with a total depth of 49.5 meters, a total width of 13.4 meters, and a construction area of 826.3 square meters. It is divided into the front hall, middle hall, and main hall. It is of brick-wood structure, with red walls and green tiles, dougong and upturned eaves. The decoration is magnificent. It uses artistic forms such as colored paintings, piled sculptures, and carvings to show a strong ethnic style and local features. Lady Xian Tai was the female leader of the Baiyue ethnic group in Lingnan in the sixth century AD. She was from Gaozhou, Guangdong. She dedicated her life to the unification of the motherland and national unity. With outstanding achievements, she is revered as the ‘Holy Mother of Lingnan’ by the people and has a wide influence in Guangdong, Hainan, Southeast Asia and other places. Later generations built many Xian Tai Temples in various places to commemorate Lady Xian Tai. There are more than 200 Xian Tai Temples just in Maoming area. The Gaozhou Xian Tai Temple is a relatively large-scale Xian Tai Temple in Gaozhou area. In the early Ming Dynasty, after the seat of Gaozhou Prefecture was moved south to Maocheng City (today’s urban area of Gaozhou), the Xian Tai Temple also moved south. It was built outside the east gate in 1535 and was called Gaozhou Xian Tai Temple. Opening hours: Open all year round from 08:00 to 17:30.
