Bird Garden on Yuen Po Street

Originally located at the current Langham Place, the Bird Garden was relocated to its current location on Yuen Po Street after a redevelopment in 1997. This Chinese-style garden-themed park is situated at the intersection of Mong Kok’s Boundary Street, Kiti Road, Prince Edward Road West, and Yuen Po Street. Due to its convenient location, beautiful design, and concentration of stalls selling birds, bird cages, and bird feed, it has become a popular recreational facility for bird enthusiasts.

The architectural features of the Bird Garden include granite floors, bamboo-shaped glazed tile roofs that shimmer in the sunlight, and over two hundred pieces of blue-white jade carved with various bird forms beside the garden. Particularly noteworthy is the exquisitely carved ‘Hundred Birds’ picture near the entrance on the Boundary Street side. Upon arriving at the Bird Garden, one can hear birdsong everywhere. Besides vendors selling birds, many middle-aged and elderly men are seen carrying birdcages covered with black cloth, either in small groups or gathered in larger numbers to discuss bird-related topics.

Note: The section of Prince Edward Road and the Flower Market Road that follows is one of the larger flower markets in Hong Kong; the nearby Tong Choi Street near Prince Station is a larger concentration of aquarium shops, commonly known as Goldfish Street; across from the Bird Garden, crossing the pedestrian overpass, is Mong Kok Station and the newly built shopping mall – New Century Plaza, which includes hotels, restaurants, and several cinemas. Another exit of the plaza leads to Bik Street via a pedestrian overpass, where the vendors on Garden Street mainly sell water reservoirs and daily necessities, and the shops are primarily focused on clothing. Further along, passing through Tong Choi Street on Argyle Street, one arrives at the famous ‘Ladies’ Market’.

The entire garden is open year-round from 11:00 to 20:00.
