Gongyuan Garden, originally a private garden of Tang Shaoyi, was first established in 1910. It took nearly 400,000 taels of silver and six years to build in stages. Initially named ‘Xiaolinglong Crystal Ball Pavilion’ due to his collection of a ‘small exquisite crystal ball’, it was renamed ‘Gongyuan Garden’ in 1915. In 1934, Tang Shaoyi publicly donated Gongyuan Garden to the villagers of Tangjia, hanging a couplet in the garden that read, ‘Open the door for visitors, why ask the owner to see the bamboo?’. Political and cultural celebrities of the time, such as Mei Lanfang, Wang Jingwei, Edgar Snow, Hu Hanmin, and Sun Ke, all visited Gongyuan Garden.
Gongyuan Garden boasts over 500 hundred-year-old trees, including rare and valuable species introduced from abroad like Japanese black pine, French mahogany, and Indian rubber fig, earning it the title of ‘Lingnan Centennial Botanical Garden’. The garden also retains historical sites such as the stargazing pavilion, pastoral villas, pigeon nests, stone archways, wisteria trellises, nine-inch dragon lotus ponds, flying banyan trees on rocks, first-class straight lion statues, Zhanyuan Pavilion, and Cuisheng Pavilion. Additionally, there are monuments built in the 1950s to commemorate the world’s naval battle miracle ‘Wanshan Sea Battle’, as well as the Anti-Japanese Hero Monument and the National Defense Construction Monument. Situated against the mountains and facing the sea, Gongyuan Garden is a picturesque 350-acre site, with a cultural heritage protection area of 50 acres, and is one of the top ten attractions in Zhuhai, known as ‘Eling Gongle’. It is an ideal place for students to inspire and seek knowledge, elders to enjoy leisure, families to relax, and art enthusiasts.
