Opposite the main entrance of the Liu Lang Wen Ying Park at West Lake in Hangzhou, at the intersection of Nan Shan Road and He Fang Road, lies an old courtyard sheltered by a stone wall. Inside the courtyard, there is a small hill called Gou Shan, also known as Bamboo Garden Hill, with a well and a spring at the top. The renowned Qing Dynasty scholar Chen Zhaolun (styled Xingzhai, and known as Gou Shan) built his residence here and named it ‘Gou Shan Qiao She’.

Gou Shan Qiao She is not only famous for Chen Gou Shan but also because it nurtured an outstanding female poet – the author of the long narrative poem in regulated verse ‘Rebirth’, Chen Duansheng. Chen Duansheng (styled Yunzhen) was the granddaughter of Chen Gou Shan and was born here in the sixteenth year of the Qianlong Emperor’s reign (1751). Known for her poetry and exceptional learning since childhood, she authored the ‘Hui Ying Ge Poetry Collection’ and was recognized as a talented woman. Her masterpiece ‘Rebirth’ is a literary work with a profound and widespread influence.
