The Great Rockery was personally designed and constructed by Zhang Nanyang, a master of rock stacking during the Ming Dynasty.
The stone materials for the Great Rockery were sourced from Huangshi in Wukang, Zhejiang. Skilled craftsmen of the time used lime mixed with ground glutinous rice juice as an adhesive to carefully stack the stones. The Great Rockery, bonded with this adhesive, has withstood centuries of weathering and still stands firm today. It is open all year round, with accessibility available at all times.
