The Wang clan, starting from the Song Dynasty, has thrived on this land for nearly a thousand years. In the mid-Qing Dynasty, the Wang family made a fortune in business along the river and returned home to build extensively, changing the overall appearance of the village. The buildings are connected in rows, with upturned eaves, exquisitely painted beams and brackets, and beautifully shaped. Particularly notable are the buildings known as the ‘Eight Great Families’, which have high ornamental value. The ‘Eight Great Families’ are the core buildings of Guan Lu Village, consisting of eight luxurious residences built by eight brothers of the same clan, led by the former residence of Qing Dynasty calligrapher and painter Wang Shu, ‘Wuting Mountain House’. Externally, the eight residences form their own units, but in reality, the buildings communicate with each other, connected like conjoined twins, vividly reflecting the clan concept and power. Beside Guan Lu Village, there is an ancient spring that remains clear and sweet all year round, refreshingly cool in the hot summer and steaming in the cold winter. Villagers who drink from it live long and healthy lives.
