The Guangdong Maritime Silk Road Museum (also known as the Nanhai No.1 Museum) is located on Shili Silver Beach, Hailing Island, Yangjiang City, Guangdong Province. With the excavation, protection, display and research of the ancient sunken ship ‘Nanhai No.1’ of the Song Dynasty as the theme, it is a thematic museum that shows the dynamic excavation site of archaeology. It is known as one of the three major shipwreck museums in the world.


It is currently a national second-level museum and a national AAAAA-level tourist attraction. The basic exhibition in the museum, ‘The Tale of Silk Road Ships and the Past and Present of Nanhai No.1’, covers an area of more than 10,000 square meters, with an exhibition line of more than 1,500 meters, and more than 3,000 cultural relics on display. The exhibition closely focuses on the theme of ‘Nanhai No.


1′ and shows its discovery, underwater excavation exploration, overall salvage, protection and excavation processes. It is divided into seven exhibition areas: setting sail, sinking, exploration, salvage, value, precious relics, and achievements. The basic exhibition mainly displays dozens of precious cultural relics unearthed from ‘Nanhai No.1’, including gold ornaments full of exotic charm, simple and elegant Chinese ceramics, and extremely rare lacquerware of the Song Dynasty.


The Crystal Palace in the exhibition area is open to the public for the excavation site of ‘Nanhai No.1’. Visitors can watch the whole process of archaeologists excavating ‘Nanhai No.1’ up close. Through the multimedia scenes with sound, light and electricity in the exhibition hall and AR/VR virtual reality, they can experience the romantic story of ‘Nanhai No.1’ sailing far away, fighting wind and waves and trading with countries all over the world, and feel the magnificent and splendid history of the ancient maritime Silk Road.


The ancient sunken ship ‘Nanhai No.1’ was an overseas trade merchant ship accidentally discovered near Yangjiang waters of Chuanshan Islands in Guangdong Province in 1987. It is an important sunken ship site named after the site sea area discovered in the vast South China Sea, that is, named ‘Nanhai No.1’ according to archaeological conventions. From 1989 to 2004, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage successively organized underwater archaeological teams to conduct archaeological investigations and explorations on ‘Nanhai No.


1′ for eight times. On December 28, 2007, according to the protection plan of ‘overall salvage, in-situ protection and on-site display’, ‘Nanhai No.1’ was successfully salvaged as a whole and successfully placed in the ‘Crystal Palace’ of the Maritime Silk Road Museum. In 2009 and 2011, ‘Nanhai No.1’ underwent two indoor trial excavations. On November 28, 2013, the comprehensive protection and excavation of ‘Nanhai No.


1′ was officially launched. Archaeological excavation confirmed that ‘Nanhai No.1’ is a sunken ship of the Southern Song Dynasty full of various kinds of goods. It is 22.15 meters long and 9.35 meters wide. A total of 15 compartments have been found. It belongs to the Fujian ship type, one of the three major ship types in ancient China. The unearthed and salvaged artifacts include ceramics, copper and iron wares, gold and silver wares, lacquer and wooden wares, coins, cinnabar, animal and plant remains, plant kernels, human remains, etc.


More than 180,000 cultural relics have been unearthed, showing the prosperous overseas trade system of China in the Song Dynasty. It is of great significance for studying the ancient shipbuilding history, ceramics history, shipping history and trade history of China and even the entire East Asia and Southeast Asia. It provides solid evidence for the millennium inheritance of the Maritime Silk Road and the commercial and cultural exchanges between China and countries along the line.


It is an important symbol of the Maritime Silk Road.


The museum is open year-round from 09:00 to 17:30.
