The Guangdong Museum is located in the southern part of the central area of Zhujiang New Town, Tianhe District, Guangzhou City. It began its construction in 1957 and was officially opened in 1959. The new building of the Guangdong Museum was founded in December 2004, completed in 2010, and covers a total area of 67,000 square meters, making it a comprehensive provincial museum in Guangdong. The museum’s treasure box-shaped exterior is very eye-catching, mainly displaying the historical culture, folk customs, arts, and nature of Guangdong.
The exhibition hall is divided into four main parts: the History Pavilion, the Natural Pavilion, the Art Pavilion, and the Temporary Exhibition Pavilion. The permanent exhibitions include the Guangdong Historical and Cultural Display, the Guangdong Natural Resources Exhibition, the Chaozhou Woodcarving Art Exhibition, the Collection of Ancient Ceramics Exhibition, and the Duan Inkstone Art Exhibition. The museum houses a rich collection of paintings and calligraphy from the Lingnan School, and some of the more precious exhibits include natural specimens such as the ‘Whale Skeleton’, ‘Giant Malachite’, and the ‘Xinyi Jade’ weighing over five tons, as well as exquisite Chaozhou woodcarvings that are truly astonishing.
