Guanyin Cave is located at the western foot of Mei Ling on Mount Putuo. The cave resembles a large natural stone chamber, with a stone pillar hanging from the ceiling to the ground. The cave’s ceiling and surrounding walls are carved with images of Guanyin. It is perpetually shrouded in the smoke of incense, with a constant stream of visitors and worshippers.
Adjacent to the cave, there is a hermitage. Originally a thatched shed during the Ming Dynasty’s Wanli period, it was transformed into a proper hermitage during the Qing Dynasty’s Kangxi period. Further constructions were added during the reigns of Daoguang, Guangxu, and Xuantong. In 1983, a seated statue of Guanyin, carved by the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, was installed in the main hall. The statue has a benevolent gaze and a solemn appearance.
Behind the cave, ancient trees provide shade, and layers of huge rocks are inscribed with the four large characters ‘The Great One Reappears’. The cave is open all year round from 06:30 to 16:30. For specific opening times, please consult the scenic area.
