The Guanzhai Mountain Scenic Area is located on the east side of Liancheng County in western Fujian. It is known as ‘the city is in the scenery and the scenery is in the city’. It is a sacred mountain in the hearts of the Hakka people. Since ‘zhi’ is a spiritual beast in ancient times and has the implications of strength and justice, Guanzhai Mountain is also called ‘Justice Mountain’. Guanzhai Mountain is steep with strange rocks.
Looking from afar, it is like a blooming lotus flower. It is also called Lotus Mountain. Together with Wuyi Mountain, it is known as ‘the northern barbarians and the southern zhi, a double wonder of Danxia’. Guanzhai Mountain really became famous during the Yuanyou period of the Song Dynasty. At that time, pavilions and attics were built by Shimen Lake and pine and bamboo were planted. This place became a gathering place for literati to compose poems and drink wine. The scenery in the mountain is beautiful and unique. Of course, literati will not miss such a good opportunity. Many cliff carvings, pavilions, attics, academies and other cultural landscapes have been left in successive dynasties. Those preserved until now include Banyun Pavilion, Songfeng Pavilion, Dongshan Academy, Xiuzhu Academy, Lingzhi Nunnery and more than 40 cliff carvings. Among them, there is the horizontal plaque ‘Romantic Charm on the Left Bank of the Yangtze River’ handwritten by Lin Zexu when he climbed Guanzhai Mountain, which is now stored in Dongshan Thatched Cottage. There is also the authentic work ‘Chasing Steps to Dongshan’ inscribed by Ji Xiaolan, a famous scholar during the Qianlong period, when he served as the dean of Fujian. Slowly tour Guanzhai Mountain, enjoy the ferns everywhere, feel the coolness between the cliffs, listen to the clear stream flowing slowly. Even climbing mountains makes people feel refreshed. If you are lucky, you may see freely wagging fish in the stream. It is particularly worth mentioning that if you climb from the front, after climbing a gentle slope of more than 100 meters, you can see a century-old pine tree with gnarled branches standing on the hill. That is the famous welcoming pine on Guanzhai Mountain. In fact, in ancient times, Guanzhai Mountain was covered with pine trees. However, due to the destruction of war in the late Qing Dynasty, the deforestation for steelmaking during the ‘Great Leap Forward’ and the indiscriminate felling of trees during the ‘Cultural Revolution’, Guanzhai Mountain almost became a bald mountain. Only this old pine tree survived because it was growing on the cliff and could not be cut down. Its gnarled branches and upright posture give people a pleasant aesthetic feeling. A few meters south of the welcoming pine is a hexagonal pavilion where tourists can quietly admire the charm of the welcoming pine.The opening hours are from 08:00 to 17:30 from May 1st to October 31st; from 08:00 to 17:00 from November 1st to April 30th.
