Guifeng Tower is situated atop Guifeng Mountain, by the banks of the Dongjiang River. Legend has it that a deity, moved by compassion for the people of Heyuan who suffered perennially from water-related disasters, placed a large turtle at the confluence of the Xinfeng River and the Dongjiang River, transforming it into a hill. Subsequently, a tower was constructed to subdue the water demons. Hence, the hill is named Guifeng Mountain, and the tower is called Guifeng Tower.
The tower was built in the second year of the Shaoxing era during the Southern Song Dynasty (AD 1132) and is considered one of the earliest dated pavilion-style brick towers in Guangdong Province. It is open all year round from Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM; during the National Day holiday, it is open from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.Guifeng Tower
