Guishan Island is located on the southeast coast of Zhuhai City, adjacent to the Lingding Ocean, with an area of approximately 8 square kilometers. It is situated among the Wanshan Islands, one of China’s four major archipelagos, and forms a strategic position with Niutou Island to the north, acting as a shield in the shipping lanes between Hong Kong and Macau. Guishan Island is one of the more developed islands in the Wanshan archipelago with a significant population, offering visitors not only coastal scenery but also a profound experience of the unique lifestyle of the island’s inhabitants.
Guishan Island holds unique historical and cultural value. A statue of the famous patriotic hero Wen Tianxiang from the late Southern Song Dynasty stands on the island, facing the sea, as if still witnessing the rise and fall of the vast Chinese land. The towering Guishan Warship Martyrs Memorial on the island records the naval battles of the People’s Liberation Army that took place here in the early 1950s, providing a place for future generations to pay their respects and mourn. In 1986, Guishan Island was designated as a cultural heritage protection unit by Zhuhai City.
