Gujian Mountain Grand Canyon Scenic Area

The drifting in Gujian Mountain Grand Canyon is located on the Gujian Mountain range of the national scenic area in Yongxin Town, Qijiang District, the southern gateway of Chongqing City, beside Lihuashan Mountain and on the Qingxi River. The drifting section of the river has a winding course. It is 5 kilometers long and has an average width of 10 meters. At the narrowest point, only one drifting raft can pass through. The cliffs on both sides are as high as hundreds of meters. There are more than 10 rapids and dangerous shoals. The overall drop of the riverbed is 185 meters. It combines shock, danger, strangeness, beauty and tranquility. There is a ‘Majing Mountain’ in the drifting area of Gujian Mountain Grand Valley. It is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom with a large terrain drop. Its unique geographical advantages and natural conditions create a picturesque landscape. The name ‘Majing’ comes from a legend: After Sun Wukong made a havoc in the Heavenly Palace, he was recruited by Taibai Jinxing and became the Protector of Horses in charge of horses in the Heavenly Palace. Later, Sun Wukong angrily rebelled against the Heavenly Palace. One of the imperial horses also took the opportunity to escape to the mortal world. Seeing the beautiful landscape of Yongxin, it stayed on this mountain. Because this celestial horse violated the heavenly rules by coming to the mortal world without permission, the enraged Jade Emperor stripped it of its magic power and banished it to the mortal world, making it guard the happiness and tranquility of this place forever. As time passed, the horse’s head and body turned into the land under its feet. Only the horse’s neck, because Erlang Shen forgot to take off the ‘Immortal Binding Rope’ tied around its neck when it came to the mortal world, was perfectly transformed into this ‘Majing Mountain’. Later generations come to worship and pray at this Majing Mountain to obtain protection.
