Located on Anhai Road in Gulangyu, the building is known as the ‘Clock Tower’ or ‘Yi Garden’ due to its resemblance to a self-striking clock.
As a contemporary Western-style architecture, the Clock Tower boasts richly decorated cornices, window lintels, and parapets, making it a uniquely beautiful and practical villa on Gulangyu.
The Clock Tower is believed to have been constructed in the 1920s, with its exact completion date and original owner untraceable; it is known that the first owner was a wealthy Chen with many concubines, and the numerous rooms in the tower were well-suited for their accommodation.
This Western-style building does not feature the floor-to-ceiling windows, shutters, or European architectural elements; instead, it has iron grilles installed behind the glass windows, a design also seen in the American Consulate and later used in many other buildings.
Lacking a moisture barrier and auxiliary buildings, the column style is not the standard Greek order but an altered version by the designer and craftsmen, with decorative sculptures added to the Ionic order, creating a distinctive style.
The facade decoration is simple and lively, using the natural color of cement and granite gravel, which blends seamlessly with the granite tones of the pressed strips and steps, providing an excellent visual effect that is bright, delicate, and elegant.
