Gull Island, located opposite to the Lotus Mountain in Panyu District, is an ecological island at the entrance of the Pearl River that remains undeveloped. It retains its original farming methods, with rice cultivation, banana plantations, and fish farming as the main industries, presenting a pastoral scenery and making it an ideal weekend getaway for Guangzhou citizens.
Gull Island boasts a lengthy coastline and is home to four administrative villages: Sha Bei, Sha Nan, Jiang Ou, and Hai Xin. The Gull Island Bridge at the northern end of the island connects the Lotus Mountain waterway with the outside world, and a 13-kilometer-long road runs from north to south across the entire island. Renting a bicycle to leisurely ride along this road is an excellent way to explore the island, enjoying the sea breeze, the sound of ships’ whistles, and the breathtaking view of the sea and sky merging into one, providing a very pleasant experience. It takes approximately one and a half hours to ride from one end of the road to the other, and renting a bicycle is very convenient with rest stops along the way for restroom breaks and relaxation.
The island primarily focuses on agriculture and breeding, with rice, bananas, fruit trees, and flowers being the main crops, and ducks, rice worms, and various fish being raised in the rice paddies. The island is abundant with flowers in spring and filled with the fragrance of fruits in autumn. The fruits and vegetables here are both affordable and of high quality, making them worth purchasing. Visitors can also take part in picking their own fruits and vegetables directly from the fields. Many farms on the island offer picking tours and fishing activities, which are worth trying.
The island is open all year round, with full-day access.
