Haimen Fortress was built in 1840 during the Sino-British Opium War to prevent the invasion of British troops. After being damaged in the Sino-French War in 1884, Liu Mingchuan (the first governor of Taiwan) rebuilt it. As it is located on the mountain road in the Ershawan area, it is also known as ‘Ershawan Fort’. Haimen Fortress is built according to local conditions. The eastern and northern forts guard the outer sea and the inner sea entrance respectively.

They are built on the higher seaside mountains. At the lower part facing away from the sea is the camp area. Inside the fort area, cannons and ammunition depots can be seen. In the camp area, there are several sections of walls and a camp gate engraved with the four big characters ‘Haimen Fortress’. Open all year round and open all day.
