Established in 1998, the Hainan Binglang Valley Li-Miao Cultural Tourism Area is located at 18 degrees north latitude, within the Gan Shi Ridge Nature Reserve, at the border of Baoting County and Sanya City. The scenic area is nestled among over ten thousand elegant and graceful areca palm forests and is surrounded by towering ancient trees and intertwined vines in a tropical rainforest. It spans an area of more than 5,000 acres, 26 kilometers from Yalong Bay beach, and 28 kilometers from the center of Sanya City. Binglang Valley derives its name from the layered forests on both sides and the continuous areca palm valley that stretches for several kilometers in the middle.
The scenic area is composed of seven major cultural experience areas: the Intangible Cultural Heritage Village, Gan Shi Li Village, Guyin Miao Home, Field Li Home, the large-scale live performance ‘Binglang · Ancient Charm’, Orchid Cabins, and the Li-Miao Flavor Food Street, all of which offer beautiful scenery. The area also showcases ten national intangible cultural heritages, including the ‘Li Traditional Spinning, Dyeing, Weaving, and Embroidery Skills’ which are listed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritages in urgent need of protection. Binglang Valley is also one of the main venues for the traditional Li and Miao ‘March 3rd’ and ‘Qixi Water Festival’, full of cultural charm and considered a ‘living fossil’ of Hainan’s ethnic culture.
