The Haitan Town General’s Office, also known as the China Haitan Coastal Defense Museum, is located within the ancient city of Haitan in Pingtan. It is a privately-run museum themed around coastal defense culture, with an exhibition area of approximately 3000 square meters. The museum employs realistic scenery, 1:1 wax figures, and naked-eye holographic imaging technology to authentically present the coastal defense and naval culture of Haitan during the Ming and Qing dynasties, as well as the glorious history of Haitan people’s resistance against invasions and foreign humiliations.
On both sides of the front hall are the exhibition areas featuring the ‘Portraits of Famous Generals from Pingtan in the Qing Dynasty’: Twenty historical figures are displayed, selected from a hundred naval officers of Pingtan origin in the Qing dynasty, including戍台名将詹功显, 抗英忠烈江继芸, and 靖海功臣孙大刚 among other naval commanders. The General’s Office was the military command center in ancient times, with the main hall known as the Tiger’s Token Hall, a significant venue for military discussions.

The hall strictly adheres to the Ming dynasty’s hall arrangement rules, with its floor paved with ‘Golden Bricks’: Golden Bricks, also known as Imperial Kiln Golden Bricks, are high-quality paving bricks used in ancient palaces and other important buildings. They are named for their fine texture and metallic ring when struck.

The inner hall showcases the largest indoor warship model in the province—a 13-meter-long reproduction of a Gan Zhuan warship, one of the museum’s main attractions. The reproduction is built on-site at a 1:2 scale of the original ship, featuring a pointed bottom and flat head, with an overall length of 13 meters and a width of 4.5 meters, representing the official main force warship of the early to mid-Qing period.

The second floor exhibition area focuses on the theme of coastal defense essentials, vividly and realistically presenting ten classic events related to Haitan coastal defense through real scene arrangements, life-size wax figures, simulated warship cabins, 3D holographic imaging, and other technologies. These events include Zheng He’s voyages, civilian and military resistance against Japanese pirates, anti-Qing restoration efforts, ocean patrols, the Penghu Sea Battle, the Haitan Sea Battle, military reviews, piracy suppression, cross-sea pacification, and resistance to foreign humiliation.

Additionally, the second floor features a virtual coastal cliff landscape—’The Abyss,’ combining sound, light, and electricity multimedia technologies to restore the intense scenes of four major sea battles, as well as a simulated cabin that highly reproduces the interior layout of a Fuchuan warship over a hundred years ago.

The third floor exhibition area is themed around the defense of Taiwan and border protection. This area primarily tells the story of how Haitan Town’s naval forces, after more than two hundred years of development, have formed a unique cultural landscape in China’s coastal regions. The area includes a ten-meter-long lacquer painting by renowned artists featuring the ‘Eight Commanders and Twelve Generals’ of Pingtan, a 3-meter-tall bronze statue of Zhan Gongxian riding a horse, and other statues, portraits, and related cultural relics of the naval commanders. The third floor also uses naked-eye 3D holographic imaging technology to narrate an extremely important ancient Chinese measure towards Taiwan—’Ban Bing Shou Tai.’
