Handan City Museum

The Handan City Museum is a sanctuary that showcases the historical and cultural heritage of Handan. In the central hall of the museum, there are three large-scale copper relief murals titled ‘The Light of Cishan’, ‘Hu Fu Qi She’, and ‘Jian’an Feng Gu’, covering an area of 210 square meters. These murals are among the largest indoor copper relief murals in China. At the center of the hall stands the bronze sculpture of Zhao State horses. The museum’s exhibition content is divided into six parts: (1) Cishan Culture. Cishan Culture represents the middle and early Neolithic cultures in China. The display focuses on the four major creations of the ancient people of Handan 8000 years ago, which include the cultivation of millet, walnuts, and the domestication of chickens and pigs. (2) Zhao Culture. During the Warring States period, Handan was the capital of the Zhao State. The display highlights the political innovation, economic status as an iron smelting center, military reforms of ‘Hu Fu Qi She’, and the cultural charm characterized by music and dance. (3) Northern Dynasties Tombs. Ye City, known as the ‘Six Dynasties Ancient Capital’, and the tomb of Princess Ruru is a microcosm of the Northern Dynasties culture. The display reflects the high level of art and culture of that era. (4) Cixian Kiln. Cixian Kiln was established during the Northern Dynasties and became an outstanding representative of Chinese civilian kilns during the Song and Yuan dynasties. The display reproduces the glorious history of Cixian Kiln with a large number of unearthed fine pieces. (5) A Century of Vicissitudes. The display reflects the rise of modern industry and commerce in Handan, the struggle for national democratic revolution, especially the revolutionary struggle in the Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan border area, and the hundred-year history of revival under the party’s leadership after liberation. (6) Handan City Planning and Construction Achievements Exhibition. The display reflects the tremendous changes in Handan after more than 50 years of planning and construction, developing into a modern metropolis.
