Yi Space Contemporary Art Center is pleased to announce the presentation of artist Wang Yongliang’s latest solo exhibition, ‘From West Lake to the Sea,’ on November 3, 2024. Following ‘Pencil – Wang Yongliang’s Forty-Seven Days (2022),’ this exhibition marks the second solo showcase of the artist’s work to the public by Yi Space, continuing the artist’s consistent approach to plein air creation. It will feature a series of works created by the artist at West Lake and by the sea.
From West Lake to the sea represents a continuation of the artist’s nearly three-decade journey of plein air creation around West Lake, and it is also a form of attraction from new subjects of painting. Most of his creations begin with ‘attraction,’ which seems to stem from a spirit of nature, given when the body is enveloped by nature and the mind is fully open. At this time, the scene is the complete subject, and the artist is a devout follower.
From being inspired by West Lake in the 1990s to recently observing the sea, the artist has always faced his subjects in traditional painting forms and responded, attempting to convey the significance between painting and life experiences. Although the creative scenes seem to be extending from the city center outward, ‘From West Lake to the Sea’ is not a linear development; beyond the sea lies a retrospective and contemplation of West Lake. Times change, cities renew, yet landscapes remain constant. The artist travels between West Lake and the sea, responding to the current era through the interplay of time and space, materials, and brushstrokes.
The exhibition will be open from November 3rd to December 3rd, with specific business hours subject to the day’s opening conditions.
