He Mijian Ancestral Hall is located on Liuting Island in the picturesque and tranquil Yuehu Scenic Area in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province. It is bordered by the Lay Buddhist Forest to the east, Liuting Street to the south, and is embraced by Yuehu Lake on the northwest sides.
The temple was built in memory of He Zhizhang, a poet from the Tang Dynasty known as the ‘Four Ming Madman’. The poem ‘Returning Home Casually’, which depicts the poignant emotions of an elderly man returning to his hometown after a long absence, has been deeply etched into people’s hearts and has been widely recited to this day.
He Zhizhang once served as an official in Mingzhou and was highly admired by the local people. There were several sites in Ningbo commemorating He Zhizhang, but now only the He Mijian Ancestral Hall on Yuehu Liuting remains.
The hall is closed all day on Mondays throughout the year; and open from 09:00 to 11:30 and 13:30 to 16:30 from Tuesdays to Sundays.
