The Hepu Han Tombs Group, situated in the eastern suburb of Hepu County within Beihai City, stands as an important cultural site dating back to the Han Dynasty. It is positioned 28 kilometers from the city center and is recognized as one of the relatively large Han tombs groups in China.
Spread across the hilly eastern suburbs of Hepu County, the tombs group hosts over 1,200 marked tombs. These tombs are categorized into earthen pits and brick chambers, with more than 400 having been excavated to date. The excavations have yielded a wealth of cultural relics, including copper lamps, copper houses, pearls, agates, porcelain, and pottery.
Historically, Hepu served as the departure port for the ‘Maritime Silk Road’ during the Han Dynasty, engaging in frequent trade with Vietnam, Myanmar, India, and Sri Lanka. The prevalence of lavish burials during this era has left behind a rich trove of cultural relics within the tombs. The cultural relics exhibition hall showcases over 5,000 unearthed artifacts, offering a genuine record for the study of ancient Chinese military, culture, art, and economy.
The Hepu Han Tombs Museum is bifurcated into two distinct sections: the exhibition of unearthed cultural relics from the Han tombs and the physical display of underground tomb architecture. The exhibition hall dedicated to unearthed cultural relics presents over 5,000 artifacts for visitors to explore. Meanwhile, the physical exhibition of underground tomb architecture predominantly features Eastern Han brick chamber tombs that have been preserved in situ and restored through relocation efforts.The opening hours are from 09:00 to 11:30 and from 14:00 to 16:30 from Tuesday to Sunday throughout the year.
