Hong Kong, China: 2024 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships

The 2024 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Hong Kong, hosted by the Hong Kong Taekwondo Association, will be held in Hong Kong for the first time from November 30 to December 4, 2024. It will be staged at the Hong Kong Coliseum in Hung Hom. Tickets for the event are now on sale, with prices ranging from $50 to $100. This event is the largest taekwondo poomsae event and will attract nearly 1,200 athletes from more than 80 countries and regions. The Hong Kong team will also send about 50 athletes to perform on home ground. The biennial World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships was first held in 2006 and is one of the largest taekwondo competitions in addition to the Olympic Games. This World Championships has been awarded the ‘M’ brand by the Major Sports Events Committee, which helps enhance Hong Kong’s image as the capital of Asian sports events, indicating that this event is a tense, exciting and stimulating major sports activity. The Hong Kong team will send about 50 athletes to compete in 27 events this time. In the men’s team, there is Chen Songxian, the representative of the U30 men’s team poomsae with a world ranking of 24 who just won the bronze medal in individual poomsae and the gold medal in team poomsae at the US Open, Ou Qiyang, the U40 representative with a world ranking of 43, and Yang Zhiying, the silver medalist in individual poomsae in the O65 group at the 2024 Asian Taekwondo Poomsae Championships. In terms of the women’s team, there is Jiang Lili with a world ranking of 19 and a bronze medalist at the Asian Championships, and Zhu Luoyi who won the 7th place at the Chengdu Universiade last year. In order to make the World Championships activities more diversified, the Hong Kong Taekwondo Association will set up a carnival in the open-air square of the Hong Kong Coliseum. There will be a series of taekwondo-themed games, exhibitions and souvenir sales stalls. So that citizens can participate in other fun and entertainment activities while watching the competition, thereby strengthening their understanding of taekwondo and achieving the purpose of promotion. In addition, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, as the official community partner of the 2024 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Hong Kong, will work with the Hong Kong Taekwondo Association to promote the ‘Jockey Club World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships Community Program’. Through outreach and lectures in schools and community organizations to promote taekwondo, enhance the public’s attention and understanding of the World Championships, and promote the knowledge and culture of taekwondo poomsae to people of all levels. The program also supports the Hong Kong Taekwondo Association to distribute 3,500 event tickets to grassroots citizens, so that they can not only experience the exciting events by entering the venue but also participate in the guided tours held during the competition and have the opportunity to communicate with top athletes. It is expected that the program will benefit about 8,000 citizens.
