City’s Heartbeat is a unique musical experience that brings together a diverse range of ethnic instruments from around the world. The performance includes percussion instruments from South America and Africa, creating a rich tapestry of sounds. It also features the dynamic and versatile Chinese pipa, which is expertly blended with the rustic charm of the Japanese shakuhachi.
This concert is a testament to Hong Kong’s unique culture and historical heritage, showcasing the harmonious integration of sounds from different geographical areas. The Run-around Ensemble, who are responsible for composing and adapting all the pieces in the concert, guide the audience on a journey to find peace and settle into the experience.
The pipa’s plucked strings gradually infiltrate the performance, driving changes in timbre and embarking on a musical journey. The program is filled with creative sound combinations, including steel tongue drum music composed by the ensemble’s music director, Tang Shun Jing. Co-music director Lam Kwan Tung will experiment with altering the pipa’s tuning and employ unique playing techniques to evoke imagery.
City’s Heartbeat can be seen as the performers sharing a concert with the audience, recording different sound combinations and the performers’ life experiences. The performance lasts approximately 50 minutes, and there is no seating arrangement. It is recommended to arrive at the venue 15 minutes in advance, as latecomers will not be admitted. HKPAX reserves the right to change the program without prior notice.
