The Rebel Alliance invites the audience into the living room of 95-year-old Inga from Denmark. Inga transcends time and space to connect with her grandson in New Zealand. Whether in real life or on television, Inga has witnessed the atrocities of world wars, the Cold War, and civil wars. Perhaps when you approach the age of 100, you come to understand many things about the world.
‘Origin’ was designed to be performed in driveways, parks, and cul-de-sacs during the 2020 lockdown. Writer and performer Anders Falstie-Jensen uses chalk to draw, adapting the Nordic myth of ‘Ragnarok’ into a story that combines disaster, family, and the unexpected.
‘Origin’ won the ‘Best Show’ award at the 2022 Nelson Fringe Festival and was a finalist for the 2020 Adam Award for Best New Zealand New Script. The play is based on Anders’ first conversation with his 95-year-old Danish grandmother during the lockdown and interviews with neighbors about their life experiences as the global pandemic suddenly struck.
‘Origin’ premiered on Anders’ driveway in 2020 and has since toured throughout New Zealand. To date, six different actors have performed the play in various settings, sometimes indoors, sometimes outdoors, sometimes for 10 people, and sometimes for 100. For The Rebel Alliance, the number is not important; what matters is the opportunity to bring friends and strangers together.
